Thoughts on Library Budget Development

I've been working hard all week to prepare my library's budget proposal for next fiscal year. Things aren't finished by a long shot. Already I'm struck by the complexity of planning a large library's expenditures. Nevertheless, I'm convinced that this exercise is vitally important. This isn't so simply because it helps the University to plan its finances. Just as significantly, the process forces the library's leadership to engage with the institution's strategic plan and the library's assessment data, and then to come to consensus about the directions that our organization will (and won't) pursue in the near future.
