Week (and Month) in Review

It’s been a month since I last posted to the blog. Yesterday I wrapped up a business trip and was able to draft some thoughts during flight. Four weeks ago I started the next course in my MBA sequence, Accounting for Decision-Making. Contrary to what the name may imply, it’s not all financially oriented. In fact, I’ve really enjoyed getting to delve into the balanced scorecard (BSC)—an analytical model that explicitly acknowledges non-financial success factors and measures of performance. Right now I’m wrapping up a class project where I applied the BSC to a nonprofit with which I’m connected. It has proven to be an enlightening experience for me. I’m hopeful that the results of the analysis will yield valuable insights for the organization’s leadership.

At work I’ve been dealing with a variety of issues:
  • figuring out how to comply with financial policies and procedures that my institution has implemented
  • helping the library monitor progress toward its strategic plan targets
  • gearing up for the next fiscal year’s budget development
  • presenting a workshop on techniques for manipulating text in Microsoft Excel
  • leading a task force that’s considering the future of my library’s assessment plan
