Creation of a Library Assessment Plan (2013-2014)
In August 2013 I was charged with the task of developing a comprehensive assessment plan that would help to demonstrate the Jerry Falwell Library's value. More specifically, I was charged with leading a newly formed body, the Library Assessment Task Force, in pursuit of this goal. Formulation of the assessment plan, competing with many other priorities, would require intermittent efforts over a sustained period.
During the 13-month process I alternated between independent action and collaboration. Collaborative work involved dozens of library employees who had a stake in the plan. A sample of the resulting plan appears at the bottom of this page. Three members of the task force, myself included, later published a case study describing the process as organizational change in the direction of a culture of assessment. Additionally, we drafted a narrative of the planning process.
